Letter from Khirma…….
Passion and ambition is how I began my journey to designer seven years ago, but my path to becoming a designer was neither simple nor direct.
My initial intent after college was to go to law school. I was Criminal Justice major with a minor in speech communication. Fashion was the furthest thing from my mind. A semester abroad my junior year to Florence studying the arts was the experience that shifted my whole course. I decided I wanted to work in fashion and having no knowledge of it landed my first job at tommy Hilfiger working in merchandising. I then parlayed that experience into a freelance editorial role at magazines including VOGUE, Harper’s Bazaar, and Elle.
This new world focused on accessories taught me the power of each component of an outfit, which led to styling Heidi Klum on Project Runway.
After a few key experiences consulting for brands including Lacoste, Levi’s, and Surface to Air, I launched my eponymous brand in 2010.
I took a leap of faith launching my brand in 2010. Knowing the accessories market, I decided to start with handbags. Quickly I learned that I lacked several essential skills, such as drawing, production and sales.
I had to learn about materials, so I went to the experts first. Starting on 38th Street, convincing tannery owners to open their doors and show me leathers and skins. Each new discovery prompted more creativity.
Using all my savings, 3 sample shapes we made and pre-sold at a private trunk show. One of the major department stores offered me my first in-store event. From there my brand grew. Today our production is out of Italy.
So many of my dreams have come true since then including opening a studio/flagship store in NYC in 2012.
We now sell not only our product but amazing designers I’ve curated for the Khirma collective. I love the process of working with others.
My process started in layers, it’s how I think of people. What makes a person beautiful to me, is the textures of their personality and how they come together. Named after mentors, women I admire, and individuals that have helped me along the way, the bags are a reflection of every woman.
To date, Instinct, passion, ambition, and learning from success and especially failures, remains at the core of my process.
